Everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Thailand

International teachers

Known for its stunning beaches, vibrant cities, welcoming people, and affordable lifestyle, it’s no surprise that Thailand remains a popular destination for teachers looking to work abroad. Whether you’re drawn to the energy of Bangkok or the relaxed pace of Chiang Mai, international teaching in Thailand offers both professional growth and a culturally rich experience.

In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Thailand, including visa requirements, cost of living, healthcare, cultural expectations, and expat communities.

Visa requirements for working in Thailand

To teach legally in Thailand, you’ll need both a Non-Immigrant B Visa and a Work Permit. Your future school will typically assist you with both processes.

Non-Immigrant B Visa: To apply, you’ll need:

  • A job offer from a recognised school in Thailand
  • An official request from the school for visa issuance
  • A letter confirming your good moral character and cultural respect

You should apply for this visa before arriving in Thailand—ideally within 30 days of your intended departure. The initial visa is valid for 90 days and can be extended to one year once you’re in the country.

Work Permit: Once you have your Non-Immigrant B Visa and arrive in Thailand, your employer will apply for your work permit. You are not allowed to work until the permit is issued.

You’ll typically need:

  • Passport with valid Non-Immigrant B Visa
  • Departure Card TM.6 (received on arrival)
  • Signed copy of your degree and transcript
  • Any teaching certificates or licences
  • CV or résumé
  • Passport-size photos
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)

Your school will also submit a series of supporting documents. For detailed information, please visit the Thailand Government website.

Cost of living in Thailand

Thailand offers a relatively low cost of living compared to many Western countries, although prices vary depending on the city or region. While Bangkok is more expensive, Chiang Mai and other cities offer a more relaxed pace at a lower cost.

Healthcare in Thailand

Thailand offers both public and private healthcare services, with a reputation for affordability and quality care.

Public healthcare is available to Thai citizens and residents at low cost. While some international teachers may access public services, there can be language barriers, longer wait times, and varying standards depending on the facility.

Private healthcare is the preferred choice for most expats and international teachers. Private hospitals, especially in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, are modern, efficient, and often staffed by English-speaking medical professionals. Services range from routine GP visits to specialist care and complex procedures.

Many international schools in Thailand offer private health insurance as part of their employment package. This typically covers access to private hospitals, shorter wait times, and broader treatment options. Having comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended, not just for peace of mind, but to ensure high-quality care in case of unexpected illness or injury.

Cultural expectations and norms in Thailand

Thai culture is deeply influenced by Buddhism, placing a strong emphasis on respect, social harmony, and maintaining a calm, polite demeanour.

Respect: Hierarchy matters, particularly in schools. Teachers are held in high regard. It’s considered rude to point your feet at someone, touch a person’s head, or raise your voice.

Shoes off: Always remove your shoes before entering someone’s home, a temple, or even some shops or classrooms.

Conflict avoidance: Direct confrontation is generally avoided. Communication is often indirect, with an emphasis on saving face and maintaining group harmony.

Legal awareness: Thai authorities are strict when it comes to law enforcement. This includes immigration rules, drug laws, and public behaviour. Respect for local customs and laws is expected and non-negotiable.

By observing these norms and being open to cultural differences, you’ll build strong relationships with your students, colleagues, and local community.

Expat communities in Thailand

Thailand is home to one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most active expat communities. With a steady flow of professionals, retirees, and international teachers, it’s easy to find support networks in key cities.

Bangkok is the hub for international schools, embassies, and businesses. It has countless social groups, professional associations, and networking events.

Chiang Mai offers a slower pace and a creative, wellness-focused expat crowd. It’s a popular choice for teachers seeking balance and affordability.

Phuket and other islands attract those seeking beachside living with access to international schools and amenities.

Expats regularly connect through social media groups, teacher networks, language exchanges, and expat clubs. These communities provide practical advice, emotional support, and social events that make adjusting to life in Thailand easier—and more fun.
