Everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Hong Kong

International teachers

Why do so many international teachers choose Hong Kong? It might be the high standard of living, the unique mix of Chinese and Western culture, or the chance to teach in some of Asia’s most respected international schools. Maybe it’s the weekend hikes, island escapes, or late-night dim sum runs. Whatever your reason, Hong Kong offers an experience that goes well beyond the job title – offering a lifestyle full of professional fulfilment and cultural discovery.

In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Hong Kong, including visa requirements, cost of living, healthcare, cultural expectations and norms, and expat communities.

Visa requirements for working as an international teacher in Hong Kong

To work as an international teacher in Hong Kong, you’ll need a valid work visa, also known as an employment visa. To be eligible for a work visa in Hong Kong, you must meet certain requirements, including:

  • there is no security objection and no known record of serious crime in respect of the applicant;
  • the applicant has a good education background, normally a first degree in the relevant field, but in special circumstances, good technical qualifications, proven professional abilities and/or relevant experience and achievements supported by documentary evidence may also be accepted;
  • there is a genuine job vacancy;
  • the applicant has a confirmed offer of employment and is employed in a job relevant to his academic qualifications or work experience that cannot be readily taken up by the local work force; and
  • the remuneration package including income, accommodation, medical and other fringe benefits is broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level for professionals in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Once your work visa is approved, you will be permitted to work legally in Hong Kong as an international teacher. It’s important to remember that your work visa is tied to your employer, so if you change jobs, you’ll need to apply for a new work visa.

Cost of living for living as an international teacher in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is widely considered as one of the most expensive cities in the world, and the cost of living for expats can be high. The main expenses for expats in Hong Kong are typically housing, transportation, and food. Housing costs are particularly high, with expats often paying significant amounts for accommodation, especially in popular areas such as Central, Causeway Bay, and Mid-Levels.

Transportation costs are also high, with taxi fares and public transportation costs being some of the highest in the world. Food costs can vary greatly, depending on the type of cuisine and where it is purchased, with western-style restaurants and supermarkets often costing more than local options. Despite these high costs, it should be noted that salaries for expats in Hong Kong are typically high, and there are often tax benefits available, which can help to offset some of the high living costs.

Healthcare for international teachers in Hong Kong

As an expat in Hong Kong, you can expect a high-quality healthcare system that is both accessible and affordable. The healthcare system in Hong Kong is a mix of public and private healthcare providers, with public healthcare services provided by the Hospital Authority (HA) and private healthcare services provided by a variety of private hospitals, clinics, and specialists.

Expats with a valid Hong Kong ID card may access public healthcare at standard rates, though many opt for private insurance due to shorter wait times and English-speaking staff. Private healthcare services in Hong Kong are known for their efficiency and high standards, with many international hospitals and clinics available that cater specifically to expats. Private healthcare, however, can be expensive, so it’s important to have adequate health insurance coverage.

Many international schools in Hong Kong offer health insurance as part of their employment package.

Cultural expectations and norms for international teachers in Hong Kong

Respect for elders and authority is highly valued in Hong Kong, and it’s customary to address people by their title or surname unless otherwise instructed. Punctuality is also important, and it is considered impolite to be late for appointments or meetings. When dining, it is polite to wait for the host to begin eating and to use chopsticks rather than a fork and knife.

Gift giving is a common practice, and it is important to offer gifts with both hands and to avoid giving items in sets of four, as the number is associated with death in Chinese culture. Additionally, public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and it is considered impolite to raise your voice or make a scene in public.

Expat communities for international teachers in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a vibrant and diverse expat community, including business professionals, teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, and students. Expats in Hong Kong often form tight-knit communities, giving international teachers the opportunity to make lifelong connections.

A gateway to Asia, Hong Kong’s strategic location and excellent transport links make it an ideal base for expats looking to explore other countries in the region. Many expats in Hong Kong take advantage of the city’s proximity to destinations such as Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, travelling extensively during their time in the city.
