Founded in 1929, Tamagawa Academy is a K-12 private school on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan. Along with Tamagawa University, the large campus sits on a site of about 610,000 square meters. Founder Kuniyoshi Obara, a prominent educator in Japan, believed in a holistic Zenjin Education that focuses on developing students through six values: truth, kindness, beauty, sacredness, health, and wealth.
As part of this philosophy, we maintain that students should have the necessary attitudes and skills to study within Japan or abroad at the university level. To this end, we became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in 2009, currently offering the Middle Years Programme (G6-10) and the Diploma Programme (G11-12). Our students therefore have the opportunity to gain a middle school and high school certificate of graduation recognized by the Ministry of Education in Japan as well as the internationally accepted IB Diploma.
Tamagawa Academy has exchange programs with 17 schools in 8 countries and is a member of the Round Square organization, a consortium of elite private schools throughout the world that share a commitment to global education and community service. Grounded in the personal development principles of Zenjin and reinforced through the pedagogical framework of the IB’s Learner Profile, Tamagawa students receive an education that is among the most holistic and progressive in Japan. Our students are curious, self-motivated problem solvers who are supported by teachers from within Japan and across the globe, utilizing the most modern tools to solve 21st-century challenges.
